Against the backdrop of already scarce and increasingly expensive living space in Germany, it is clear that the demand for affordable housing will continue to rise in the future. This no longer only applies to rapidly growing cities, but also to rural regions. Here and there, intelligent strategies need to be developed for the construction of residential buildings that take into account urban planning, ecological, economic and social aspects.
Existing buildings offer some of the greatest potential in every town and village. The advantages are obvious: they are integrated into the urban and social fabric and are already connected to all transportation and supply networks.
The Residential Building of the Year Award was presented for the first time in 2019. This year, the jury awarded prizes in 14 categories: Experimental approach, redensification, subsidized housing construction, intergenerational living, innovative façade, rural area, mixed use, modular housing construction, sustainable energy concept, participatory planning, premium living, neighbourhood development, revitalization and high-rise residential building.
