German Design Award for „Urban quarter at Braunschweig’s main goods station“

“We are proud that an urban planning, innovative and forward-looking project has managed to win this award. It is also recognition for everyone who was and still is involved in this process. It confirms that competitions involving all stakeholders lead to a very good result,” commented the prize winner Frank Buken, architect from Hamburg, who is also planning the new Airbus visitor center Elbair.

The quarter at the main goods station is to become the initiator and driving force for further development in Bahnstadt. A new and urban city quarter is to be created here with attractive residential and future-oriented commercial uses, as well as a cultural use based on local commitment. Against this backdrop, the city of Braunschweig launched an urban development and open space planning realization competition “Urbanes Quartier Hauptgüterbahnhof” for an area of approx. 21 ha in November 2022, which is intended to show the long-term perspective for the area at the Hauptgüterbahnhof and thus develop a staggered implementation strategy. Nineteen teams from Germany, Austria and Switzerland took part in the competition.

The Hamburg architects and urban planners prasch buken partner architekten bda and GHP Landschaftsarchitekten, Nikolaus Gurr + Christin Schierstedt, won the competition for the quarter at the main goods station. The winning design is the basis for the development plan to be drawn up and its implementation.
